About this shark
This shark was caught in Jupiter, Florida and is the beautiful animal in the images featured.
About this adoption
This shark was fitted with a PIT tag and a 9 month- 1 year SPOT (Smart Position or Temperature Transmitting) tag.
The SPOT tag records and stores water temperature and transmits to Argos satellites each time the shark surfaces giving us a location. On adoption we will provide you with the data for your shark, as well as weekly updates on its movements!
In exchange for this adoption donation, you will have the privilege of naming, you’ll receive an adoption certificate, and we’ll excitedly reach out to you with regular updates whenever the shark surfaces which provides us with her latest movements/location! e.g. You’ll be tracking the movements!
Regarding the PIT tag, this does not transmit signals, but is scanned by researchers during a recapture, just like the tags used in pets.
General Information
If you would like to adopt a curious, bold, and seemingly fearless shark, silkies are the ones for you! These pelagic sharks have been consistently recorded as the second highest traded shark in global fisheries, and with so little known about them in the northwest Atlantic, you can play a part in our research efforts to help them.
** There will be a photograph of your adopted shark, however it will likely be during the tagging process **
** Your adoption certificate will be sent as a PDF to your email address **
