Join us LIVE and learn from the best! We’re offering small groups of up to ten participants exclusive one-hour lectures, presentations, and other learning opportunities on a variety of topics. See below for more information. We hope you can join us!
The Lecture
Hammerheads: where they go and how we follow them. Understanding animal movement can benefit conservation by supporting informed and adequate management strategies. Studying shark movements can be logistically difficult, but advancements in tracking technologies allow us to follow our sharks into ever more remote areas. Join us to learn more about commonly used tracking techniques and movement models with examples from the local and regional movements of great and scalloped hammerheads in the US Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and The Bahamas.
Date: November 17th, 2022
Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm EST / 10:00am-11:00am PST

The Speaker
Vital Heim - Saving the Blue Expedition Leader and Phd Student
Vital’s Publications: www.researchgate.net/profile/Vital-Heim
Vital graduated with a BSc in Biology from the University of Bern, Switzerland and a MSc in Animal Biology from the University of Basel, Switzerland. Vital is currently a PhD student in Zoology at the Zoological Institute of the University of Basel, Switzerland.
Vital’s research focuses on the movement patterns and space-use of great and scalloped hammerheads, Sphyrna mokarran and S. lewini, in the US Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Using satellite and acoustic telemetry, as well as fishery data analysis, the objective of the project is to reveal the overlap between the US shark bottom and pelagic longline fisheries to discuss the efficiency of potential time-area closures as an adequate conservation strategy for these two hammerhead species.
