June 15-21st 2025 - HYBRID TRIP!
Trip Leader: TBC
Trip Date: June 15-21st 2025
Trip Terms: Terms and Policies
For the first time ever we’re offering a hybrid expedition! You’ll get the best of both worlds; supporting and conducting important shark research plus diving and ocean exploration! All photos on this page were taken around Andros.
Schedule
Our days with vary, however we anticipate dividing the week into two halves. Some days we’ll focus on shark research and others in and on water experiences.
Example 1: Conducting shark research all day.
Example 2: Habitat exploration, snorkeling, shark encounters etc. all day.
Example 3: A morning activity diving with silky sharks in the pelagic zone with an afternoon activity conducting shark research in a completely different and far away location such as the shallows of a reef.
About the Diving/Experiences
Andros offers Pristine coral reefs, has the third largest fringing reef in the world and incredible inland and ocean blue holes! It has a deep oceanic trench that reaches eerie depths of 2000 meters, and expansive mangrove forests, seagrass, sand and mud flats. Activities will vary from stunning coral reef snorkels and excursions out to the open ocean, to exploring the vast creek systems and mangroves the island has to offer. We’ll aim to visit at least four of our well-known and much loved sites, including: Lemon sharks in the shallows, silky sharks in the pelagic zone, a thrilling ocean blue hole and our favorite coral reef snorkel known as The Garden.
About the Research
Each expedition will be led by one of our resident scientists, an experienced field technician, and seven research assistants (you). Research assistants will be immersed all week in mini classes, such as knot tying and equipment preparation, followed by in-field experience, and for some, actively participating in research activities.
We will conduct a variety of science-based activities, which will include some of the following: baited remote underwater video surveillance deployments (BRUVs), drum line surveys, poly ball captures and more. We are truly excited to learn more about the sharks and rays of Andros, and we thank you in advance for your support. LEARN MORE HERE
Who can join
Anyone! This trip is open to everyone. All participants are required to be able to swim, and have some experience with snorkeling and outdoor adventure, with a keen interest in sharks and marine life. We do prefer some previous shark experience, however we pride ourselves on helping guests learn to overcome fears and enhance their confidence in and on the water during interactions with wildlife. If this interests you, don’t hesitate just because you don’t have former experience. We understand and encourage dream chasers, and would like to give everyone an opportunity to be part of our journey in making a difference.
***** TO NOTE ***** As per the Bahamas Department of Environmental Planning and Protection (DEPP), participation in all or some of the research activities will be dependent on your experience and education level. Those with a science/marine biology degree (or similar) will participate in all tasks, those without this level of relevant education will take part in all activities that do not involve the handling of an animal e.g. a shark or ray. All assistants regardless of experience and education will participate in equipment creation/deployment and data collection, they will also attend lectures and presentations. If you are unsure if your education qualifies you to be hands on and would like clarification please contact us.
